The College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka (CGPSL) is the apex professional and academic body representing Family Physicians and General Practitioners in Sri Lanka. Founded in 1969 and incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1974, the College is the national authority dedicated to advancing excellence in General Practice / Family Medicine.
The CGPSL’s mission is to promote General Practice as a recognised academic discipline and to strengthen the quality of primary care delivered to individuals, families, and communities across Sri Lanka. For over five decades, the College has played a central role in setting standards in family practice through education, scholarship, professional leadership, and advocacy.
The College has been pivotal in developing family medicine education and training in Sri Lanka, including its role in establishing the Board of Study in Family Medicine at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine and supporting the integration of Family Medicine into undergraduate curricula. Through its Faculty of Teachers of Family Medicine, the CGPSL conducts the Membership of the College of General Practitioners (MCGP) Postgraduate Programme, the only postgraduate course recognised by the Sri Lanka Medical Council outside university-based programmes.
CGPSL represents Sri Lanka at World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA), publishes the Sri Lankan Family Physician, develops clinical guidelines, supports continuing professional development through the CGPSL Academy, and organises the long-standing Annual Academic Sessions – GP Sri Lanka, contributing to the continued strengthening of primary care nationwide.
