
Privileges of CGPSL Membership
Membership of the College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka (CGPSL) offers a range of academic, professional, governance, networking and social benefits.
1. Full Participation in College Governance
- Attend statutory General Meetings.
- Vote at General Meetings, in accordance with the College Constitution.
- Be elected or appointed to College offices and committees, subject to eligibility.
- Contribute to College policies, programmes and activities.

- Concessionary rates for CGPSL academic programmes and events, including the Annual Academic Sessions.
- Complimentary access to Therapeutic Guidelines Australia.
- Complimentary access to CGPSL educational resources and online learning platforms.

- Eligibility for selected awards, scholarships, fellowships and grants.
3. Professional Development
- Opportunities to serve as resource persons, trainers, examiners and assessors.
- Mentorship and networking with senior Family Physicians and General Practitioners.

4. Professional Identity & Recognition
- Use the post-nominal MCGP, where applicable.
- Receive a CGPSL Membership Card.
- Eligibility for College vehicle/parking passes, subject to availability.
- Wear CGPSL academic dress at appropriate College functions.
- Use official College accessories, including the tie, tie pin and saree brooch.
- Be listed in the official CGPSL Membership Directory, subject to consent.
5. Professional Information & Resources
- Receive members-only updates through official WhatsApp groups and email.
- Access and contribute to My College, the CGPSL newsletter.
- Access and contribute to the Sri Lankan Family Physician, the College journal.
- Access CGPSL clinical guidelines, educational materials and professional resources.
- Receive updates on College activities and developments in Family Medicine.
6. International & Professional Networking
- Participate in WONCA activities through CGPSL as a member of a WONCA Member Organisation.
- Access international collaborations, exchanges and academic opportunities facilitated by CGPSL.

More Than a Membership
CGPSL membership is an opportunity to participate, learn, lead, connect and contribute to the advancement of General Practice and Family Medicine in Sri Lanka.
Members
The Membership of the College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka (CGPSL) is reserved for the medical doctors registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council, under section 29 of the Medical Ordinance and should be practising in Sri Lanka.
One of the following criteria should be fulfilled.
- The Applicant should have completed the MCGP Postgraduate Programme and been successful at the MCGP Examination in conformity with the regulations in the MCGP Prospectus;
AND
- been engaged full time General Practice in the community or in a Department / Unit of Family Medicine at a University, continuously for a minimum period of three years, immediately before the date of application;
OR
- been engaged part time General Practice in the community, continuously for a minimum period of five years, immediately before the date of application;
OR
- been engaged in general medical practice, in a Unit of the Ministry of Health or a Private Health Services institution, recognised by the Council of CGPSL, continuously for a minimum period of five years, immediately before the date of application.
2. A doctor who is in full time or part time general practice who has completed twenty years as an Associate of the college, shall also be eligible for the membership of the college.
NB: From May 2026, membership applicants who have obtained the MCGP postgraduate qualification are exempt from the mandatory one-month General Practice mentoring programme that was previously required before obtaining membership of the College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka (CGPSL).
Associates
A Medical practitioner in Sri Lanka, registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council under section 29 of the medical ordinance can apply for the Associateship of the CGPSL upon the payment of the same fees as Members of the Corporation.
International Associates
A general family practitioner, not residing in Sri Lanka, who is a Member / Fellow of a professional organisation of General Practitioners / Family Physicians, in the country of residence, may apply to be an International Associate of the College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka.
Student Associates
A medical student registered at a Faculty of Medicine of a University in Sri Lanka recognised by the SLMC, having an interest in general family practice, may apply to be a Student Associate of the College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka.
Important
- Members and associates should pay the stipulated fees to obtain and maintain their membership/associateship.
- Associates of the Corporation shall be entitled to participate in the academic and social activities of the CGPSL, but shall not be entitled to wear the academic dress of the CGPSL nor to participate in or vote at statutory general meetings of the CGPSL.
